6 LESSONS LEARNED WHILE WRITING MY DEBUT NOVEL

The Art of Murder is a romantic suspense and was published in 2020. It's available on Amazon for purchase.

Like all authors, I learned so much while writing this first book. The best experience is the lived experience, right? Below is a list of things I wish I did differently, if I knew then what I know now. One thing I did well was protecting my writing time--I wrote while my daughter was in half day preschool.

1. I wrote the scenes with my big ideas first without a story plan. While this is not frowned upon, I stopped to outline and that threw off my momentum because I started thinking too deeply.

2. I quit drafting to edit. Creative writing and editing are two different types of thinking, from different sides of your brain. You can't be creative and write brand-new words and edit.

3. After the first draft, I changed from third person to first person.

4. I waited until the book was done to begin building my author platform.

5. I wish I spent more time in the editing process. The story and characters could have been fleshed out further.

6. I wish I had made a plan for a book launch, rather than a few haphazard social posts and crossing my fingers.
